Turkey sacks 43 governors for links to Islamist preacher

The Turkish Interior Ministry has dismissed 43 district and deputy governors over suspected links to the Gülen movement, which Ankara holds responsible for the July 2016 coup attempt, Hürriyet reported Tuesday.

The majority of the sacked governors were serving in eastern Turkey and some of them were also appointed as mayors after dismissals of elected Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) mayors because of their alleged links with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), Hürriyet said.

Since the failed coup attempt, 563 out of a total of 1,875 governors have been investigated and 470 of them were fired, Hürriyet said. 120 governors are still on a black list, it said.

Turkey has dismissed more than 150,000 state employees over suspected links to the Gülen movement and arrested thousands in state institutions, including the police force, army and judiciary.
