Prosecutors charge Turkish beauty queen over coup attempt comments

Ankara prosecutors have announced that they are charging a Turkish beauty queen with hate speech over her comments on the first anniversary of a failed coup attempt, the television channel Ulusal Kanal said.

Itır Esen, 18, had her Miss Turkey World crown revoked the day after it was awarded in September when it came to light that she had compared her menstrual cycle to the blood of those who died in the traumatic incident.

She now faces a possible year’s imprisonment for hate speech in relation to the tweet.

Esen later posted on Instagram that she had made the tweet “completely innocently” and that it was an honest sharing of pain at a time when she was feeling it.
