Ankara Governorate cancels HDP rally for Erdoğan rally
The Ankara Governorate has announced the last-minute cancellation of a rally on Saturday by the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) in order that it should not clash with a meeting to be held by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the province, opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet said.
Snap elections for both the Turkish parliament and the presidency are due to take place on June 24.
The governorate decided that it would place too much of a burden on security services to have to police two different rallies in the capital at once, and therefore rescinded its permission for the HDP rally to go ahead.
Erdoğan’s rally is to be held at the 19,209-capacity May 19 Stadium in Ulus in central Ankara.
