“I gained experience by watching Narcos” - Deputy PM

Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister with responsibility for fighting the country’s war on drugs has revealed where he gets his inspiration from.

“I stayed on my feet until four in the morning and finished three seasons of the series Narcos very quickly in order to gain some experience,” Recep Akdağ told the World Health Organisation conference on non-communicable diseases in Madrid on Wednesday.

The series is a thriller telling the story of the fight waged by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) against Colombian cocaine baron Pablo Escobar.

Turkey, meanwhile, is struggling against heroin gangs which use the country as a gateway to Europe.

Ankara insiders say DEA help is limited at present, since Turkish authorities arrested Metin Topuz, the U.S. consulate’s local staffer who acted as a go-between with security services.
