Compulsory service in Turkey’s east to be introduced for academics
A system of compulsory service in Turkey’s east is to be introduced for newly-qualified academics in the state sector, left-wing news site Gerçek Gündem said.
Turkey’s east and southeast is the scene of a three-decade-old Kurdish separatist campaign in which tens of thousands on both sides have been killed.
Eighty percent of new academics are expected to participate in the new system, the site said, which is to be modelled on the compulsory two-year service period for newly qualified doctors.
Those exempted will be the highest-performing 20 percent of academics in terms of research, it said, a move which the Higher Education Council predicts will increase the competitiveness of the academic sector.
After two years, the academics would be able to return to universities elsewhere, the site said.
