Turkey dismisses imam for giving rock concerts
Turkey’s state Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) has dismissed an imam who gave rock concerts in the southern city of Antalya, the Hürriyet newspaper said on Friday.
The Diyanet said Ahmet Muhsin Tüzer had been dismissed for behaviour contradicting Islamic morals.
Tüzer, working as an imam since 1990 and a co-founder of a rock band, denied the charges and said he would appeal the decision, Hürriyet said.
The 47-year-old imam said he had been guiding many people with his music and other projects. In addition to music, Tüzer said philosophy, literature, poetry and theatre were essential for an imam's success.
Tüzer said he had received death threats while trying to attract people towards Islam through music.
