India to buy Russian air defence system
Indian defence ministry officials have told the Hindustan Times that their country is set to purchase of the S-400 air defence system from Russia in the wake of Turkey’s purchase of the same system.
They said that the $5.5 billion deal was due to go ahead despite objections from Washington, which has threatened to curtail military cooperation.
Now that negotiations had been concluded with Russia, the newspaper said, India’s Cabinet Committee on Security, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, would have to confirm the deal.
The Indian defence ministry, it added, was also eager to prevent Russia from selling the system to Pakistan.
Russia has already sold the system to another of India’s major rivals, China.
The sale of S-400s to Turkey has been a major factor in the recent breakdown of relations between the country and the United States.
