80-year-old actress facing prison for insulting Erdoğan

A Turkish prosecutor has filed a case against veteran Turkish actress Nilüfer Aydan for allegedly insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Cumhuriyet newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The 80-year-old actress is facing four years and eight months in prison over social media posts between 2016 and 2018, the newspaper said.

Insulting the president is a crime according to Article 299 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) and carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

Investigations and convictions on Article 299 have skyrocketed since Erdoğan stepped into office as president in 2014.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Aydan denied the charges.

“I don’t think the president would file a lawsuit when there is so much happening in the world, including a pandemic,” Aydan said. “I request an acquittal.”
