Number of students detained for “insulting Erdoğan” increased to four
The number of students detained for carrying a banner with cartoons of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s face on a variety of animals at their graduation ceremony on Friday increased to four on Sunday, Deutsche Well Turkish reported.
The police detained on Sunday morning Özgür Mehmet Gür, the president of the Middle East Technical University student council and a member of the university’s LGBT solidarity group. Three students were previously detained by police in house raids on Saturday morning on charges of insulting the president.
The cartoons had already been at the centre of another case, in which the cartoonist was found innocent of the same charges for drawing them.
