Turkey bans four news sites overnight
Turkey banned access to four pro-Kurdish news websites overnight as part of a long-running crackdown on media critical of the country’s conservative Islamist government.
The left-wing newspaper Evrensel said the Information Technologies and Communications Institution (BTK) had banned Mezopotamya Agency (MA), 1HaberVar, Demokrat Haber and Özgürlükçü Demokrasi.
Demokrat Haber was banned for the third time, while the Özgürlükçü Demokrası news website was banned for the 45th time. The sites have previously reopened under new domain names every time access to them was banned.
The forerunners to these sites – Dicle News Agency and Özgür Gündem – were among 15 Kurdish media organisations that were officially closed down and had their assets seized under a state of emergency decree in October 2016.
