Iranian president says Kurds in Syria should support Assad government

Iranian President Hasan Rouhani said Turkey had legitimate security concerns about its southern borders, but the right solution would be the complete withdrawal of U.S. forces from northern Syria and the deployment of Syrian government forces with Kurdish support, Reuters reported citing an Iranian state news agency.

“Turkey is rightfully worried about its southern borders. We believe that a correct path should be adopted to remove those concerns ... American troops must leave the region ... Kurds in Syria... should support the Syrian army,” IRNA quoted Rouhani as saying on Wednesday.

The Turkish military said it was ready for an offensive against Kurdish-held territories along its southern frontier after U.S. President Donald Trump ordered U.S. troops to withdraw from the Syrian border area.
