Hundreds of British ISIS fighters hiding in Turkey – The Times
At least 300 British-origin jihadists who had been fighting for the Islamic State (ISIS) have fled to Turkey, The Times said on Wednesday.
They are among thousands of ISIS fighters of all nationalities now based in the country, the newspaper reported, and Western intelligence agencies fear that the country will become a gateway to Europe for those looking to carry out terror attacks in the West.
However, The Times said, relations between Ankara and Western intelligence agencies had improved over the past three years, with their anti-terror goals becoming increasingly aligned.
Only three terror attacks in Europe since 2015 have involved foreign terrorist fighters returning from the Middle East, but they have been exceptionally deadly, the newspaper said.
