U.S. paid ISIS "many, many dollars" - Erdoğan

Turkey’s president told governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) officials on Friday that the United States had been a major funder of the Islamic State (ISIS).

“You paid ISIS many, many dollars,” Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said, rhetorically addressing the country. “But my soldiers and the Free Syrian Army have heroically struggled against ISIS.”

Erdoğan also said that America had put the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) in a good light, had destabilised Iraq and had cultivated what he called the Fethullahist Terror Organisation (FETÖ), a group he accuses of masterminding last year’s failed coup as part of its plan.

It was now becoming clear, he said, that the West had set up ISIS to further their own interests in the Middle East.

“All the images of ISIS beheadings were presented through channels under the control of Western countries,” he said. “It is understood that these are manifestations of a sophisticated plan undertaken to reshape the region.”
