Turkish court sentences teenager to more than four years in jail for kissing
A Turkish court sentenced a 16-year-old boy to four-and-a-half years in jail after his peers recorded and shared a video of him kissing a 13-year-old on school grounds, the Cumhuriyet newspaper reported.
A total of six students were charged in what has come to be known as “the kissing case” in Turkish media, involving a 13-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy and their peers who shot video footage of what appears to be the two kissing in their school yard.
The boy has been found guilty of deprivation of liberty and sexual misconduct with a minor under a law that forbids sexual conduct with children under the age of 15.
The students who recorded and spread the video in school, which eventually made its way to the school management, were acquitted on charges of spreading obscene content, Cumhuriyet said.
The boy’s lawyer, Zuhal Merve Ozfidan, said she is preparing to appeal the verdict.
