AKP and Zarrab are partners in crime, opposition leader

The ruling AKP is an accomplice in Iranian gold trader Reza Zarrab’s crimes, Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said in his speech at the parliament.

Slamming the government for its handling of the U.S. criminal investigation against the former businessman, opposition leader said President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu have all visited the United States to demand Zarrab’s release to no avail.

“It is because they are complicit in Zarrab’s crimes,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

Erdoğan and ministers have maintained that Reza Zarrab helped Turkey’s economy, and today Erdoğan said the U.S. investigation is a plot against Turkey.

Reminding the conviction of Babak Zanjani in Iran, who was arrested for his alleged role in sanction-busting scheme with Zarrab, Kılıçdaroğlu said:

In Iran, Zanjani and Zarrab were tried [latter, in absentia] and the court ruled that they damaged Iran’s economy, its national interests. In Turkey, the case was covered up. Because the ruling party politicians were accomplice in the graft probes, they were named. Now they claim it’s a national cause [to defend Zarrab]. Can thievery have a nationality? Can corruption have a nationality?
