Turkey’s TRT World eyes online viewers with the help of former AJ+ strategist

The English-language channel of Turkish state broadcaster TRT has begun targeting young audiences with explainer videos on YouTube, the entertainment magazine Variety reported.

“There is so much noise out there at the moment, and we want to build something where people are able to pause, watch, and learn something new,” Variety quoted Riyaad Minty, head of digital strategy for TRT World, as saying.

Minty was a strategist for the Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera during the 2014 launch of its AJ+ online channel.

Variety’s picked an example of TRT World’s new video content which criticises U.S. and Canadian arms deal with Saudi Arabia, Turkey’s regional rival.

The magazine noted that TRT World was criticised for advancing Turkish government’s interests, and questioned press freedom in the country.

Minty defended TRT World’s independence.

“The thing I tell most people is simply to watch our screens and then decide for yourself,” Variety quoted him as saying. “Our content speaks for itself.”
