Turkish journalist sentenced to three years for tweet

The editor of Cumhuriyet newspaper’s website has been sentenced to three years and one month in jail over a tweet that was deleted within a single minute, Reuters said.

Oğuz Güven was sentenced over a tweet that described a state prosecutor as having been “mown down” by a truck, but which was quickly deleted and replaced by one more sympathetic.

The prosecutor had been involved in the preparation of an indictment against suspected Fethullah Gülen movement members, and Güven was accused of discrediting the struggle against the exile cleric’s followers.
