Nine killed, dozens missing after migrant boat capsizes off Aegean coast

A boat carrying migrant capsized off Turkey’s Aegean coast on Monday, killing at least nine people while 25 migrants are believed to be missing, independent news site Diken reported.

The boat carrying a total of 35 migrants on board capsized Monday evening, Diken said, citing an Iraqi woman who swam back to shore in order to seek help from Turkish authorities the next day.

The 30-year-old woman boarded the boat at İzmir province’s resort town of Foça on Monday, together with her husband and their five children.

The woman and her husband swam toward the coast when the boat capsized, but her children, who had life vests, went missing. Tuesday afternoon her husband who could no longer “resist” the waves died while she remained in the water for about 28 hours.

The bodies of nine migrants have been recovered by search and rescue teams which are still looking for missing migrants, Diken said.

There has been a recent surge in the number of migrants trying to cross into Greece from Turkey as they attempt to make their way into Europe. https://ahvalnews.com/migrants/greece-sees-rise-migrants-entering-turkey
