HDP, Good Party pledge İnce 2nd round support in Turkish presidential race
The pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) and Turkish nationalist Good Party have pledged to support Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate Muharrem İnce if he is left challenging incumbent president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a second round presidential election run-off.
While both parties have their own candidates – jailed former HDP leader Selahattin Demirtaş and Good Party leader Meral Akşener respectively – polls suggest that Erdoğan will top the first round poll and that İnce is currently the leading challenger.
“When we established this party, the CHP’s presidential candidate was not clear. We expressed that whoever remained (against Erdoğan), we would support them with no conditions,” Akşener said.
“But there is no need to talk about these things today. We must strive with all our powers to win the presidential elections.”
HDP parliamentarian Mithat Sancar shared these sentiments.
“We are pleased that the opposition’s efforts are so strong. If we do not remain in the second round (of the presidential elections) we will support Muharrem İnce,” he said.
In the parliamentary elections, his party only risked falling under the 10 percent threshold to enter parliament if the polls were rigged, Sancar said.
“That is why we must look after our votes, we must protect the ballot boxes very well,” he said.
“If we pass the threshold, even if Erdoğan wins the election, he will no longer be able to do as he pleases, because the opposition will be a majority in parliament: we will have won parliament.”
