Muharrem İnce breaks Erdoğan’s unbeatable image – Le Monde

Muharrem İnce, the presidential candidate for the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) made the front page of the French daily Le Monde on Tuesday in a profile that paint as “the revelation” of the campaign for the Jun. 24 elections.

“Combative, biting and a fine polemicist, Muharrem İnce … is equipped to give President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan a cold sweat,” Le Monde’s profile said.

İnce’s high-energy campaign has seen him traverse Turkey, sometimes giving four speeches in a day to packed crowds in quieter areas as well as the country’s big centres. Le Monde noted the “passion” elicited by the CHP candidate during his speeches, and the down-to-earth and confident style the crowds have responded so well to.

“With rolled up sleeves and speech loud and clear, this 54-year-old former physics teacher has managed to break a taboo that says Erdoğan is unbeatable,” Le Monde said.

İnce’s performance has been a key factor in turning the June snap elections, which were initially seen by many as a foregone conclusion, into a genuine contest. Many now expect no presidential candidate to receive over 50 percent of the vote in the first round, which will lead to a second round run-off two weeks later between the two leading candidates, expected to be Erdoğan and İnce.
