Presidential candidate calls for five million-strong Istanbul rally

Turkish opposition presidential candidate Muharrem İnce has called for 5 million people out of the 15 million inhabitant city to attend his Istanbul rally on the eve of the June 24 election, opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet said.

“On the 23rd there is a great Istanbul rehearsal at 1 o’clock at Maltepe,” İnce said.

“I have said that there will be 2 million there. We have changed that. Five million,” he said at a rally in the neighbourhood of Beykoz in Istanbul, telling everyone in the crowd to bring three others. “I want June 23 to be the largest meeting in the history of the republic.”

İnce also asked participants who were football fans to wear their kit to the meeting to show how they were overcoming old rivalries.

Later, he compared his plan to upskill Turkey’s young people by sending them overseas for doctorates to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s announcement that he would provide free tea and cake in cafés across Turkey.

On the economy, İnce said that Erdoğan had always claimed the credit for good credit ratings in the past, so no-one should believe him when he now says the ratings agencies are the tools of foreign imperialism.
