Turkish opposition figure offers party head honourary presidency

Turkish opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) presidential candidate Muharrem İnce has revealed that he offered party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu the honourary presidency of the party if he would resign and induce a leadership contest, Hürriyet newspaper said.

“I have had no offer from Kılıçdaroğlu,” İnce said. “But I have sent an offer to him. I have said to him that he will not be in the (party leadership) race, and offered him the honourary presidency.”

The pressure is on Kılıçdaroğlu after his party achieved only 22.6 percent of the vote at parliamentary and presidential elections on June 24, as opposed to İnce’s 30.6 percent.

After losing the election, İnce disappeared for hours before giving a press conference the next day, disappointing many of those who had worked on his campaign. However, in recent days he has sought to give an account of his actions and made it clear that he is in contention for the leadership position.

İnce stood unsuccessfully against Kılıçdaroğlu for the party leadership in February, garnering 447 votes from party delegates as opposed to Kılıçdaroğlu’s 740.
