Turkish opposition presidential candidates meet in prison
Turkish opposition presidential candidate Muharrem İnce has visited a rival for the position, the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party candidate Selahattin Demirtaş, in jail, Cumhuriyet said.
İnce, the candidate of the secularist Republican People’s Party, said he would visit President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan tomorrow, as he intends to meet with each of the other presidential candidates before the ballot.
He spent an hour visiting Demirtaş before having dinner with a group of party officials and former Justice and Development Party minister Abdüllatif Şener, who is supporting İnce’s candidacy.
“I have met Mr. (Temel) Karamollaoğlu (of the Felicity Party). I have met Ms. (Meral) Akşener (of the Good Party). I have met Mr. Demirtaş. I want to meet with everyone who is a candidate and wish them the best of luck,” İnce told reporters.
“Yesterday they called from Mr. Erdoğan’s office … I believe we are to meet tomorrow.”
Demirtaş issued a statement after the meeting thanking İnce for his constructive comments and solidarity and giving his wishes that the election would result in a win for democracy.
