Turkish presidential candidate to meet jailed rival’s wife
Turkish opposition presidential candidate Muharrem İnce, who is holding a rally in the majority-Kurdish city of Diyarbakır on Monday, will also visit Başak Demirtaş, the wife of jailed pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party presidential candidate Selahattin Demirtaş on his trip, left-nationalist news website OdaTV said.
The secularist Republican People’s Party (CHP) candidate, who is standing in parliamentary and presidential elections on June 24, met people and gave out manifestos wherever he went, CHP Diyarbakır head Mehmet Sayın said, and there was much interest in İnce in Diyarbakır.
İnce’s visit to Demirtaş in jail in Edirne and his words on Kurdish issues had endeared him to the people of Diyarbakır, Sayın said.
İnce will likely need a strong turnout among Turkey’s Kurdish population if he is to beat incumbent president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in a second round run-off of the presidential election.
