Myanmar releases TRT World’s drone journalists

A court in Myanmar released two journalists, a translator, and a driver for flying camera-equipped drone near the country’s parliament building in capital Naypyidaw.

The team was on an assignment by the Turkish public broadcaster TRT’s English service, TRT World, Turkey’s state-run news agency Anadolu (AA) reported.

The journalists were originally charged with unauthorised drone-flying, importing illegal aircraft and violating immigration law.

The latter two charges were dropped last week, the report said.

A lawyer for the team was quoted as saying the journalists were expected to be released in January, after serving their two-month jail term for unauthorised drone-flying.

Myanmar has also been holding two Reuters reporters in jail since Dec 12, the report said, and they will stand trial on Jan 10, 2018. Journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo are accused of obtaining state secrets while reporting on the situation of Myanmar's Rohingya minority.
