Turkey says NATO relations unaffected by S-400 purchase

Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defence systems has not affected its relationship with NATO, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said on Tuesday.

“We have no issue with NATO. When you look at the statements of the secretary general, even the deputy secretary general with regard to the S-400 and other issues, it is not a problem for NATO. Turkey is in the top five contributors to NATO,” Hürriyet newspaper quoted Çavuşoğlu as telling reporters in Thailand, where he is attending a meeting of foreign ministers.

The United States suspended Turkey from the programme to help build and fly F-35 fighter jets after the first S-400 components were delivered two weeks ago. Economic sanctions could follow. The United States says Turkey’s deployment of the S-400 missiles would allow Russia to gather data on the defences of the F-35s.
