Pro-government broadcaster sees positive side of inflation

Turkish pro-government broadcaster NTV has caused a storm on social media with a tweet suggesting that the high rate of inflation reported for this month will be welcomed by the Turkish public.

Inflation surged to 15.4 percent in June, the highest it has been since 2003, although still not at the hyperinflation levels Turkey has seen in the past.

NTV’s response was to look on the bright side.

“#BREAKING The inflation figures which will determine the increases in wages and pensions for millions of workers and pensioners have been revealed,” it tweeted.

Others were not so sanguine.

“Millions of workers? Why don’t you say they are only public-sector workers? Who in the private sector has received a 10-15 percent wage increase for years?” a Twitter user named Gültekin Gökçe responded.
