Ten Turkish sailors taken hostage off Nigerian coast
Armed pirates off the coast of Nigeria took 10 Turkish sailors on board a cargo ship hostage, Kadıoğlu Denizcilik shipping company said on Tuesday.
The sailors, on board the Turkish-flagged Paksoy-1 cargo ship, were seized in the early hours of Tuesday following an attack in the Gulf of Guinea as they sailed from Cameroon to Ivory Coast, pro-government Cumhuriyet newspaper reported.
Another eight crew members remained safe on the ship, it said.
“There were no injuries or casualties, according to initial reports,” the company said in a statement. “Efforts for all our personnel to be safely released are ongoing.”
The West African coast has long been a target for pirates with the Gulf of Guinea described by the International Maritime Bureau as the most dangerous area in the world for piracy.
