Turkish police to hire 2,000 more armed watchmen for Istanbul

Istanbul police are hiring 2,000 more armed watchmen to patrol the streets alongside trained police.

Successful applicants, who are required to be male high-school graduates under 30 with a normal body mass index, will join 386 others who began working in August.

Most watchmen are on duty at night to supplement police numbers, and this has led to claims that they are being prepared to fulfil the role of “morality police”.

Istanbul Police Chief Mustafa Çalışkan, who has nicknamed the paramilitary force “The Night Eagles”, told earlier recruits not to hesitate to use their guns.
