Almost 70 poisoned at Turkish opposition meeting – report
Almost 70 people received food poisoning at an annual conference of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) at the weekend, Cumhuriyet newspaper reported.
Several of those who were taken ill were journalists and members of private security firms, the newspaper said. Ambulances arrived at the scene and took party members to nearby hospitals, it said.
At the conference, the CHP re-elected Kemal Kilicdaroglu as party leader. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave a lengthy speech at the height of the conference, prompting main stream television to switch coverage.
The food poisoning may have been caused by contaminated doner meat, Cumhuriyet said.
