Over half of Turkish citizens agree with jailing opposition leader - survey
A new poll by Konsensus Research has found that over half of Turkish citizens were in favour of the continued jailing of an opposition leader and that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has a positive approval rating, according to left-wing news site Gazete Duvar.
51 percent of those polled said that the jailing of Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş pending trial was “right”, while 31 percent said it was “wrong”.
45 percent said that Erdoğan was running Turkey “well”, while 39 percent said he was running it “badly” and 16 percent said it “would do”.
But respondents did not agree with Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli supporting the government. Only 17 percent thought this was “good”, while 56 percent said it was “bad”.
The approval rating of main opposition party leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu was also low, with 26 percent saying that he “did opposition well”, while 52 percent said he “did opposition badly”
