German translator Meşale Tolu released pending trial
German citizen and foreign news translator for left-wing news agency Etkin News Agency (ETHA) Meşale Tolu was among six people released pending trial at a hearing on Monday, leftist news website Gerçek Gündem said.
Tolu was arrested on May 6 on charges of “making propaganda for a terrorist organisation” and “terrorist organisation membership” after attending the funeral of a member of the Marxist-Leninist Communist Party, and faces a possible 15 years in prison if convicted on both counts.
German Ambassador Martin Erdmann, German journalist Günter Wallraff and German Left Party parliamentarian Heike Hänsel attended the hearing.
Another German-Turkish journalist, Deniz Yücel, remains imprisoned awaiting trial.
