Turkey prevented overthrow of Qatari leader – Turkish daily
Turkish troops foiled a coup attempt against the emir of Qatar by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earlier this year, Islamist newspaper Yeni Şafak said, citing both Turkish and Qatari officials.
“On the night of June 5, nearly 200 specially trained Turkish units that were deployed in the regions/countries near Qatar were mobilized upon an order from Ankara,” the newspaper said on Monday.
“The order was to prevent a possible coup attempt on that night that would be carried out by another country or countries against the emir, and to provide security for him and his palace.”
The Turkish units acted before the special forces from Saudi Arabia and the UAE arrived, forcing them to turn back, the newspaper said.
Thus, it added, the two Gulf countries were relegated to using a blockade to force out the emir and replace him with his nephew in London, a move which proved unsuccessful.
