Ankara purchased VIP jet for Erdoğan from Qatar, says opposition MP
Ankara has acquired a new VIP jet for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Eroğan from Qatar, left-nationalist news website Oda TV quoted opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Gamze Taşcıer as claiming on Wednesday.
A Boeing 747-8 model jet, which was put up for sale by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has been added to the Republic of Turkey’s state fleet, Taşcıer, who forwarded the claim as a written question to Vice President Fuat Oktay, said.
The CHP deputy noted that the B747-8 model plane, which left Basel, Switzerland on the evening of Sept.11 and landed in İstanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport just past midnight, is most likely the plane purchased from the Emir of Qatar.
The 400 million dollar, seven-bedroom and two-reception hall plane contains a small hospital and meeting rooms and has been transformed into a 76-seat VIP plane, according to Taşcıer.
‘’The presidential palace calls on the people of Turkey to save on almost daily basis. But the same people who call for belt-tightening measures cannot give up on luxury and ostentation. Millions of people are living in poverty and misery while the gentlemen of Ankara are purchasing flying palaces,’’ Taşcıer said in an apparent reference to the country’s ongoing financial crisis.
Erdoğan’s angry feud with U.S. President Donald Trump has pushed Turkey towards a currency crisis with the lira losing 40 percent of its value since the beginning of the year.
