Could we have paid off IMF debt if we didn’t have a production economy? -Erdoğan

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hit back at ultra-conservative Saadet (Felicity) Party leader who criticized Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) for its lack of investment in production, saying, ‘’We’ve tripled our growth, could we have done this without production?’’

Speaking at AKP’s Maltepe district 6th ordinary congress, Erdoğan had Turkey’s economy on his mind as highlighted that Turkey’s per capita income has increased to 11,000 dollars, left-wing Cumhuriyet daily reported.

‘’And now someone is saying that we are going to stop investments,’’Erdoğan said, in an apparent reference to Felicity Party leader Temel Karamollaoğlu, who rejected multiple times AKP offers to join its’ right-wing alliance with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

‘’Turkey’s exports have total 160 billion dollars today,’’ the Turkish president said, ‘’Could we have done that without production? We are in a position to defend ourselves today when we look at our defense industry. What about all this?’’

The Turkish president also addressed opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Kılıçdaroğlu last week said that he would be distributing title deeds to those living in shanty homes in İstanbul’s Pendik district. ‘’Do you have title deeds in your pocket?’’ the Turkish president asked.

The Turkish president, while noting that İstanbul’s population has doubled in size since he served as mayor of İstanbul from 1994 to 1998 - increasing to 15 million from 7.5 million - underscored it was AKP’s municipal services that kept the city running, despite a surge in population in the city that hosts almost 19 percent of Turkey’s population.
