Erdoğan makes visit to ailing anti-Atatürk historian
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has made a hospital visit to an ailing Islamist historian known for his opposition to the figures of the early Turkish republic, opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet said.
“I wish that the Greeks had been victorious” in the Turkish War of Independence, Kadir Mısıroğlu had famously said. “Neither would the Caliphate have been destroyed, nor the sharia.”
He has previously applauded Erdoğan for being “a statesman who defies the Jews,” saying that Erdoğan storming out of a 2009 discussion with Israeli President Shimon Peres was “more important than the War of Independence”.
During Erdoğan’s visit to the hospital, a bystander told him to “look after yourself, you’ve aged a lot…” to which he replied, “Thanks.”
Mısıroğlu has been being treated for kidney complaints related to diabetes for the last month.
