“Turkey’s tyrant just got even more despicable” U.S. paper
Any hint of moderation in Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is long gone, according to an editorial in the New York Post.
The editorial, headlined Turkey’s tyrant just got even more despicable, focused on Erdoğan’s interaction with Amine Tıras, a 6-year-old girl he spotted dressed in military fatigues and crying as he delivered a speech in the Turkish city of Kahramanmaraş on Saturday. Calling the girl to the stage, Erdoğan kissed her and told the crowd: “She has the Turkish flag in her pocket. If she becomes a martyr, God willing, this flag will be draped on her.”
Hoping that children will die for the cause is a hallmark of the very worst Islamists, the New York Post noted, with others on social media comparing Erdoğan to Hitler. “You don’t wish death for a child, you never say: ‘God willing.’ ” said one comment.
“Glorifying children’s deaths? Promoting child soldiers? Sick,” Andrew Stroehlein, the European director for Human Rights Watch, was quoted as saying in the article.
Erdoğan’s comments come at a time when he is trying to rally public support for Turkey’s invasion of Syria’s Afrin region, which began on Jan. 20.
