9 dead after refugee boat sinks off Turkey

Nine people, including six children, died, after a speedboat carrying Syrian refugees sank off the coast of the southern province of Antalya, the Turkish coast guard said on Sunday.

The incident took place last night around 2.22 a.m. local time and fishermen alerted the cost guard to the emergency. Six people were rescued, but the coast guard found nine who had drowned.

A Syrian couple who were rescued lost their five children in the accident, Evrensel newspaper reported. “They threw us to the boat, told us to ‘go’. We were on the boat for two hours, Then it sank. I had my children,” İdris Raşit, the father of the children said.
