President is witness at Turkey’s first official religious wedding

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was a witness at his country’s first officially registered wedding presided over by a religious official, the pro-government Yeni Şafak newspaper said.

In the ceremony, Defence Minister Nurettin Canikli’s son Furkan Canikli was married to Rabia Tuna by Ankara’s chief mufti in the presence of Erdoğan, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Parliamentary Speaker İsmail Kahraman.

The legal change to allow the practice, which was passed by parliament on Oct. 19, attracted concern from women’s organisations concerned it would help legitimise unregistered marriages and increase the social acceptance of child marriage and polygamy.
