Turkish singer Mustafa Ceceli child custody battle draws criticism
Turkish singer Mustafa Ceceli has provoked a strong reaction on social media and from Turkish celebrities, after submitting a video showing his former wife in intimate relations with another woman during a court battle for custody of his child, Turkish daily Sozcu reported on Saturday.
Ceceli and his former wife, Sinem Gedik, who married in 2008, divorced last year, after it was rumoured he was having an affair with socialite Selin İmer. As part of the divorce settlement Gedik received 3 million YTL ($720,000) and an Istanbul house worth $1.5 million.
A year later, Ceceli applied to an Istanbul court to request custody of the couple’s 6-year old son, providing as evidence a video, later leaked on the internet, that purports to show a lesbian relationship between former wife and another Turkish singer Intizar (Arslan).
The company producing Intizar’s albums, Poll Production, on Saturday said they had cancelled their contract with the singer. Polat Yağcı, poll’s owner said, “We have read the stories on media about Intizar with regret and surprise. Our company has no links to her in anyway starting from today.”
The cancellation of Intizar’s contract drew a harsh response from Murat Dalkılıç, also contracted to Poll, who said that he no longer felt comfortable working with the company.
Other prominent figures from the Turkish artistic and music community responded to events by releasing statements supporting of Intizar.
Singer Simge Sağın, a singer, said, “You are not alone Intizar, and you are not in the wrong.”
“Unfortunately, men and women are not equal in any respect,” said actress Nilgün Belgün.
“Leave Intizar alone, said another singer Mabel Matiz, “Do the world a favour and cut out your homophobia.”
