Turkish Salafi groups issue letter of support for Erdoğan
A group of 14 Salafi organisations have issued a statement in support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Justice and Development Party (AKP) government in upcoming June 24 elections despite disapproving of democracy, left-wing newspaper BirGün said.
Erdoğan should be re-elected “in order not to again live through the enmity to our religion, treachery to our country, and tyranny against our people. In order not to be like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen and Egypt. In order not to squander our victories over the past 16 years,” the statement said.
“As Sunnis in the Salafi path, we inform the public that we support the president and his present government with the opinion that they are better than their peers on the basis of what they have done so far.”
Ebu Said Yarpuzlu, one of the signatories of the letter, added that the signatory groups had never approved of democracy and still wanted Sharia law.
