Court sentences Turkish Twitter user for using “Allah” in his handle
A Turkish Twitter user using the handle “Allah CC” has been sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in jail for insulting religious values, Cumhuriyet newspaper reported on Friday.
The court in the eastern province of Muş overseeing the case decided to commute the prison sentence handed to the defendant, a teacher based in Eskişehir, central Turkey, to a fine of 7,000 lira ($1,327).
The Turkish man from Muş who filed the complaint against the Twitter user has vowed to appeal against the decision, saying a person who had insulted religious values deserved a prison sentence.
This is not the first time the prosecutors in Muş have gone after this Twitter user. A court in the province sentenced the teacher to 15 months in prison in 2014 for using a handle which the court said was religiously offensive.
