Turkish footballer arrested on terror charges
A Turkish footballer was arrested by police on suspicion of belonging to a terrorist organization.
In a career spanning the previous decade, centre-forward Zafer Biryol, 41, played for several different clubs including Fenerbahçe and Bursaspor, the state-run Anadolu news agency said.
Biryol is accused of being a follower of Fethullah Gülen, whom President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's government blames for orchestrating a failed coup last year. He was found to have subscribed to ByLock, software reportedly used by the Gülen group for secret communication, Anadolu said.
Biryol would follow international striker Hakan Şükür into the Turkish prison system. Şukur, who was a deputy for Erdoğan's ruling Justice and Development Party before his arrest, is also accused of being a member of the Gülen movement.
