Turkish national football team to play Iran for first time since 1974
The Turkish and Iranian football federations have agreed to play a friendly match between the two national teams before the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals, the first time the two teams will have played each other since 1974, news channel CNN Türk said.
The agreement comes as Turkish leaders voiced their support for the Iranian government, which has faced large protests.
The two countries will play the match no later than the last week of May, with the date and location of the match to be announced later, the broadcaster said.
At the World Cup finals in Russia, Iran will play Portugal, Spain and Morocco in Group B. Turkey did not qualify.
Turkey has historically won four matches against Iran, drawn two and has never been defeated.
The last match between Iran and Turkey took place on Jan. 20, 1974, with Turkey winning 1–0.
