Turkish population now more than 80 million
The population of Turkey exceeded 80 million for the first time in 2017 according to new figures released by the Turkish Statistical Institute on Thursday.
The population of Turkey is now 80,810,525 people, with the province of Istanbul alone making up 15,029,231 of them.
Four other Turkish cities – Ankara, İzmir, Bursa and Antalya – exceeded the 2 million-population mark.
Despite government encouragement of families to have more children, the median age increased to 31.7 and the annual population growth rate dropped from 13.5 per thousand in 2016 to 12.4 per thousand in 2017.
