Turkey banning online sale of cyanide after string of suicides
Environment and Urbanisation Minister Murat Kurum on Wednesday said Turkey would soon ban the online sale of cyanide, Turkish news site T24 reported.
Turkey has been hit by a recent spate of family deaths by collective suicides involving cyanide; a total of 11 people in three families have died over the last 10 days.
Habertürk news site reported that there was a dramatic increase in the number of people who searched the word cyanide on Google and some e-commerce companies had removed cyanide from their websites following reports in the Turkish media.
Financial problems are one of the major factors prompting Turks to commit suicide, according to a report by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK).
The number of suicides in the country rose to 3,161 last year from 3,069 in 2017, TÜİK said.
