Turkish-backed forces looting Afrin – Observatory

Turkish-backed militants began looting shops and homes in Afrin after they seized control of the city on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

A large number of houses In villages around Afrin were already subject to robberies, including of machinery and agricultural tools, the U.K.-based organization said.

More than 1,500 fighters of the People’s Defence Units (YPG) and allied forces have died since Operation “Olive Branch” began on Jan. 20. Almost 500 have died on the Turkish side, including 78 soldiers, it said.

Pro-Turkish forces entered Afrin city centre on Sunday after the YPG vacated it, bringing down a Kurdish statue in the main square and taking over administrative buildings. Some of the fighters of the Free Syrian Army wore masks and wielded machettes.
