Turkish troops enter Syria’s northern Latakia - pro-Assad news agency
The Syrian Army and Turkish-backed rebels exchanged several hours of sporadic missile and artillery strikes in northern Latakia on Saturday, Syrian Al- Masdar News reported.
Turkey launched an operation against Kurdish fighters in the Syrian enclave of Afrin in January despite objections from the United States and European Union. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed to keep up the pressure against a US-backed Syrian Kurdish militia following the capture of the Kurdish-held city of Afrin in March.
A Turkish military convoy on Saturday entered the northern countryside of the Latakia Governorate, which is a clear violation of the Astana peace agreement, the agency said, quoting a source from the Syrian army which said that Turkish military is looking to set up its 13th observation point in Syria in Latakia.
Turkish forces positioned themselves in the northern part of the Jabal Al-Akrad region and were met by several warning shots of the Syrian military, Al- Masdar said.
