U.S. should should maintain military presence in Syria -Saudi Crown Prince
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed that American soldiers should remain in Syria.
“We believe American troops should stay for at least the mid-term, if not the long-term,” Prince Salman told TIME magazine.
While noting that U.S. military presence is the last effort stopping Iran from continuing to expand influence with regional allies, the Saudi Crown prince, who is currently on a multi-city U.S. tour, noted that the presence of the troops, will also allow Washington to have a say in Syria’s future.
There are currently about 2,000 US troops working with Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to re-capture territory from ISIS.
During the interview, the crown prince stated that he wishes Syrian President Bashar al-Assad not become a ‘’puppet’’ for Tehran, and that is not likely that al-Assad will be ousted from power.
Saudi Arabia and Iran have been in a decades-long struggle for regional dominance.
