Russia, Turkey broker Idlib ceasefire - Russian media

Russia and Turkey have brokered a ceasefire in the de-escalation zone in Idlib, the last province held by opposition groups in Syria, Reuters quoted Russian news agencies as saying on Wednesday.

The Russian agencies cited Russian military sources as saying violence dropped dramatically on Wednesday after the ceasefire was called, though no there is no indication as to how long it will last.

Moscow and Ankara signed an agreement last September to prevent an attack from Syrian regime forces, stipulating that Turkey would set up a de-escalation zone and remove extremist groups from it as part of the deal.

The rise in Idlib of Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a jihadist group including former members of groups linked to al Qaeda, led to attacks from Syrian regime forces with Russian forces this year, as well as heavy bombardment since May.

Hundreds of civilians have been killed in the bombardment, and tens of thousands have reportedly been forced to flee their homes and head to camps near the Turkish border.
